What’s under a roof done right

7 layers between you and the rain

Shingles are only what you see. Here is every layer we install, with a photo from one of our jobs.

UNDERLAYMENTUNDERLAYMENTUNDERLAYMENTUNDERLAYMENTUNDERLAYMENT
  1. Solid wood decking
    1

    Solid wood decking

The base of the roof. Soft or rotten boards get replaced, and old gapped boards get covered with plywood.

  2. Drip edge
    2

    Drip edge

Metal along the edges that sends water into the gutter instead of under the roof and into the fascia.

  3. Self-adhered membrane
    3

    Self-adhered membrane

A sticky waterproof layer at the eaves and in the valleys, where water runs and collects the most.

  4. Synthetic underlayment
    4

    Synthetic underlayment

Covers the whole deck under the shingles. It is a second line of defense if a shingle ever fails.

  5. Flashing
    5

    Flashing

Metal that seals where the roof meets a wall, a chimney or a skylight. The number one leak spot when it is done wrong.

  6. Architectural shingles
    6

    Architectural shingles

Thick, layered shingles nailed in straight rows. They stand up to wind and rain far better than old flat shingles.

  7. Ridge & attic vents
    7

    Ridge & attic vents

Let the attic breathe so moisture doesn’t rot the wood from below and the shingles last longer.

Questions

Straight answers

Tap a question: the answer opens right below it, with a photo from our jobs.

Are you licensed, bonded and insured in Washington?

Yes. We are a registered construction contractor with Washington L&I, license MRMENMR748B9, with a $30,000 bond and $1,000,000 in liability insurance. You can check it yourself on the L&I website.

Are estimates really free?

Yes. We come out, look at the roof, show you photos and give you a clear estimate. No cost and no pressure.

Do you take emergency calls?

Yes, 24/7. If water is coming in or a storm opened up your roof, call us and we’ll tarp it as fast as we can, then plan the repair.

Do you work with insurance claims?

Yes. For wind, hail or storm damage we take photos of every damaged area and give you a written estimate you can share with your adjuster.

What warranty do you give?

Our labor is covered for 10 years. If something we installed fails because of how we installed it, we come back and fix it.

How long does a new roof take?

Most homes take a few days. It depends on the size of the roof, how many layers come off, how much wood needs replacing and the weather. Your estimate tells you how long yours will take.

What about the rain?

We plan around the forecast and cover anything that’s open before the rain comes. In the Northwest that’s part of the job.

Do you pull permits?

It depends on the job and on your city. Before we start, we tell you whether your job needs one.

Is moss bad for my roof?

Yes. Moss holds water against the roof and grows under the edges of shingles, lifting them. If moss has already damaged your shingles, we repair or replace them, and we check for it in every inspection.

Do you do torch-down roofing?

No. For flat and low-slope roofs we install self-adhered and rolled membranes. If torch-down is what you need, we’ll tell you right away.

Where do you work?

We’re based in Lakewood and work across Tacoma, Spanaway, Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, Auburn, Kent, Renton, Sammamish, Seattle, Everett and the rest of the Seattle area, up to 100 miles away.

¿Hablan español?

Sí. Both of our phone lines answer in English and Spanish, and we explain the whole job in the language you prefer.

How can I pay?

Cash, check, Zelle or bank transfer.

Do you work for other contractors?

Yes. Besides homeowners, we work as the roofing crew for general contractors and builders.
